Choosing a regulated broker for automated trading: a practical checklist

Regulation first

In automated trading, funds stay in your broker account: broker strength is therefore the first risk item, even before strategy quality. In Europe, key authorities are national regulators coordinated by ESMA (in Italy, Consob); outside Europe, FCA (UK) and ASIC (Australia) are generally considered high-standard jurisdictions.

Verifying a license does not mean reading the broker website footer: it means looking up the legal entity in the public register of the stated authority and checking that the entity you contract with is actually the regulated one - many groups operate multiple entities across jurisdictions.

Execution quality and technical compatibility

For automated systems, parameters matter that manual traders often ignore: execution latency, requote frequency, stop-level policy (minimum distance accepted for stop and limit orders), and any explicit hostility toward Expert Advisors. This must be read in contractual documents, not marketing pages.

Practically, you need an MT5 account (or MT4 depending on the execution platform used) with full trading credential access. "Managed" accounts or accounts with API-access restrictions are not suitable for automation.

Costs: spread is not everything

A frequently trading system is far more sensitive to transaction costs than a position investor. Beyond average spread on target instruments, consider per-lot commissions, overnight swap fees, and - often overlooked - fill quality under volatile conditions.

The practical recommendation is simple and effective: open a demo account, run your signal flow for a few weeks, and compare theoretical results with actual execution. No comparison table replaces this test. And always remember broker choice remains the client's decision: a serious execution platform is broker-agnostic by design.
